The right traffic cones for every requirement
To ensure that you use the appropriate and permitted road safety cones, you first need to know what you are using it for. The regulations of the German RSA (guidelines for the safety of workplaces on roads) and BGI 800, which covers accident scenes and hazard areas, also regulate the criteria for using safety cones. These regulations cover type and duration of use.
Traffic cones can be used for many different purposes. Reflective safety cones are usually used on public roads, for example, to keep road users safe in hazardous areas. But cones can also safeguard other areas. For example, businesses set up traffic cones to designate special areas. They are also used in motor sports to mark danger zones and in car parks to provide barriers.
Day-glow (fluorescent) or partially reflective traffic cones above a height of 300 mm are also suitable for all kinds of non-public spaces and indoor or outdoor areas. These safety cones, which come in various sizes, do not have to be reflective, so they are relatively inexpensive.
Along with solid safety cones, compact collapsible traffic cones are also available. They save space because they can be reduced to a height of just 50 mm by retracting them into the base. They also have integrated LED lighting for an extra night-time warning effect, which can be further enhanced with an attachable flashing LED light. However, this type of road safety cone is only approved for short-term protection of accident scenes or breakdowns.
Features of traffic safety cones
According to StVO § 43, road traffic cones must have bands in the colours red and white. When used on public roads, traffic cones must have retroreflective red and white bands. Day-glow cones are not permitted for use on public roads. Retroreflective road safety cones light up at night when light, e.g., from headlights, shines on them. They reflect some of this light, so they can easily be seen in the dark, even from a distance. The required reflective strips of the traffic cones are made of type A or type B reflective plastic. The cones must also have an appropriate height and weight depending on their intended use.
Traffic cone colours – what is allowed
Only red and white cones are permitted for use on public roads. These colours, red and white, must be present in bands around the cone. In addition, traffic cones must have retroreflective foil type A on their surface. Cones used on private areas or tracks do not have to be BASt-tested TL cones. These cones can also have orange and white instead of red and white bands.
Height and weight of road traffic cones
Our reflective traffic cones are available in two different heights:
- Traffic cones measuring 500 mm high are required on normal public roads.
- Traffic cones measuring 750 mm high are required on public motorways and expressways.
Both these large traffic cones must correspond to the BASt standard. These traffic cones have the required approval from the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt approval).
To ensure stability, certain minimum weights are also prescribed for tested TL cones. Traffic safety cones are divided into two weight classes, which determine the minimum weights depending on the height of the cones. Small traffic cones of weight class I are not TL-compliant.
Height (in mm) Minimum weight for class II Minimum weight for class III
500 1.9 kg 2.5 kg
750 4 kg 5 kg
Material used for traffic cones
Traffic cones are made of durable, flexible, pliable material (soft PVC). The advantage of this plastic is that damage to the traffic cone is limited if it is driven over. A stable base plate made of solid plastic or environmentally friendly recycled rubber ensures a secure position.
