Jump-starting
(0)How to jump-start properly
A scenario that every car driver fears. For example, when the car won't start after a cold night because the car battery is low or even flat. Thanks to the right jump starters and the right application, however, you will be ready to start again quickly. Find out about the various options and the correct procedure here.
When do cars need to be jump-started?
Jump starting is always necessary when the car battery no longer has enough power to start the vehicle engine on its own. Car batteries are particularly stressed in the cold season by the starting processes of cold engines. However, the various power consumers such as seat heating, rear window heating, etc. also put additional strain on the battery. The increased power requirement means that the alternator cannot fully recharge the battery on short journeys. When cars are parked for long periods, the self-discharge of the car battery also has an effect. If the battery is weak or discharged, the starter motor can no longer work properly, which means that the vehicle engine can no longer be started.
Simple and reliable jump-starting with a jump starter.
Professional jump starters provide a quick and successful jump start for many vehicles. There are several advantages to these devices, as they are portable, easy to store and therefore quickly at hand. The main advantage, however, is that no second car is required for jump starting. There is no need for the tedious bridging of a cable connection between two vehicle batteries using jump leads.
Proper jump-starting by using jump-starting devices
To jump-start the vehicle correctly and avoid damage to the vehicle's electrical system, there are a few points and, above all, the correct sequence to follow:
- Observe the vehicle manufacturer's instructions regarding jump-starting with a dead battery.
- Never jump start when the vehicle battery is missing (in the worst-case scenario, this can lead to expensive damage to the starting vehicle).
- Order as outlined below must be strictly observed.
Properly jump-start with a jump starter
A step-by-step guide
-
-
Connect the positive cable (red cable or red clamp) directly to the battery.
-
The ground cable (black cable or black clamp) is connected to the bodywork (stable, unpainted, metallic spot).
-
Press "!" on Noco devices for a deeply discharged battery.
-
Do not engage the starter for a long time (max. 10 seconds). Switch on electrical consumers, such as the fan, to avoid harmful voltage spikes.
-
First, disconnect the black cable from the negative terminal and then the red cable from the positive terminal.
-
After a successful jump start, it is best to drive a longer distance so that the alternator can fully recharge the battery.
-
Which cars should not be jump-started?
Not all vehicles are equally suitable for jump-starting or bridging. For vehicles with different operating voltages in the donor and recipient vehicle, no jump-start should be carried out, as this can lead to severe damage to the electronics. For example, a 24-volt system should not be bridged with a 12-volt system. Electric cars should also not provide jump-start assistance, as their electrical systems function differently and there is a risk of damaging the sensitive electronics of both the electric car and the vehicle being bridged. Therefore, it is important to always consult the operating manuals of the involved vehicles before performing a jump-start and to seek professional help in case of doubt.
Start booster 12 V
These stable jump starters ensure a quick engine start on-site for vehicles with a dead 12 V battery. They feature a robust plastic housing, a powerful battery (type lead-gel or lithium), and sturdy, long starter cables with insulated battery clamps. Integrated protection circuits prevent damage from incorrect operation to the jump starter and the vehicle engine.
Start booster 12/24 V
Jump start devices with switchable charging voltage of 12/24 V are ideally suited for starting car or truck engines. Powerful lead gel batteries - packed in robust, stable plastic housings - ensure the provision of high starting currents. The start boosters have practically long, massive starter cables with insulated battery clamps, and built-in protective circuits ensure a safe engine start.
Projecta
The PROJECTA boosters are equipped with a powerful LiFePO4 battery and patented Rapid Recharge Technology (RRT®). A battery management system protects against reverse polarity, overvoltage, and short circuits. Recharging after starting included.
Provide jump start assistance with a jumper cable.
Jump-starting using jumper cables is often only applied in professional settings for starting truck engines. In the field of cars, handy and convenient jump starters dominate in workshops or roadside assistance services. However, large-volume truck engines require high amounts of current for starting, which jump starters can only provide partially or not at all. For this purpose, there are special external starting systems in the form of jumper cables, specifically tailored for these applications. Jumper cables are also frequently used for jump-starting in private settings.
Correctly jump-start with a jumper cable
To perform a professional and correct jump start, various points and especially the correct sequence must be observed, otherwise damage to the electrical system may result.
Correctly jump-starting with a jumper cable
A step-by-step guide
-
-
Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the donor battery. Connect the other end of the red cable to the empty car battery.
-
Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the donor battery or the designated ground point. Attach the other end to a stable, unpainted metal part in the engine compartment of the recipient vehicle or to the ground connection. The black cable should not be connected directly to the discharged battery, as any hydrogen gas escaping from the battery could ignite due to sparking.
-
First, start the engine of the donor vehicle to ensure there is enough power for the jump start.
-
After starting the donor vehicle, wait a few minutes before starting the engine of the breakdown vehicle. First, turn on the ignition and allow the control units to boot up. The start attempt should not last longer than 15 seconds. If the engine does not start, try again after one minute. Warning: repeated unsuccessful start attempts may cause damage.
-
If the breakdown vehicle has started, both vehicles should have the major electrical consumers such as ventilation, rear window heating, seat heating, and lights switched on at the highest level to avoid harmful voltage peaks.
-
First disconnect the black cable from the receiving vehicle, then from the donor vehicle. Then disconnect the red cable from the positive terminal of the receiving vehicle and then from the positive terminal of the donor vehicle.
-
Due to the weak battery, turn off the power consumers again, but keep the engine running.
-
After a successful jump start, it is best to drive a longer distance so that the alternator can fully recharge the battery.
