What are automotive spotlights for?

The powerful full beam of our auxiliary headlights for trucks enables you to accurately assess the road ahead in your truck, even at night or in poor visibility, and react in good time. LED spotlights emit particularly high-contrast white light. Our Hella spotlights also have a sidelight or position light function. The automotive spotlights we offer help you stay safer on the road.

How many vehicle spot lights are allowed and who is allowed to use them?

How many vehicle spot lights may be fitted depends on the vehicle category. This is regulated by law in detail by ECE regulation R48 § 6.1 for lighting devices on motor vehicles. For normal vehicles such as cars, motorhomes, vans and lightweight trucks up to a gross vehicle weight of 12 t, a maximum of four spotlights may be fitted. A total of six auxiliary spotlights can be fitted to trucks weighing more than 12 t. The regulation does not define the mounting height and mounting width. However, auxiliary automotive spotlights must not dazzle the driver or oncoming traffic.

Regulations for use of auxiliary vehicle spotlights

The aforementioned ECE regulation contains specific legal regulations regarding electrical connections, i.e., how the auxiliary truck spotlights are operated, and switch-on control:

• Automotive spotlights can be switched on together with the existing headlights or separately, as auxiliary headlights. The lights must always be switched on in pairs. No more than two pairs of lights may be switched on. When dipped, all spotlights must switch off simultaneously.
• A maximum of two pairs of automotive spotlights may be operated in addition to the existing full beams.
• The total light output of the full beam lights when switched on must not exceed the reference value of 100 specified by the ECE. This reference value is stamped onto the lens of approved automotive spotlights, where it is always legible.
• Extra auxiliary spotlights must be displayed in the cab with a blue light symbol that is always in the driver's field of vision.
• When switching to low beam, all auxiliary full-beam spotlights must be switched off.
• All headlights must be labelled with the prescribed E marking.

Full beam spotlights for trucks
