Technical features and applications of a 12V electric winch
Electric winches are used on vehicles with a 12-volt system. The winches can also be mounted on trailers. In this case, a 12V battery provides the required power supply. The electricity powers an electric motor (12V). This motor drives a reduction gear which turns the winch drum with a high traction force. This tightens and spools the steel winch cable or synthetic winch rope onto the drum. Our 12V winches have traction forces ranging from 800 to 5200 kg. Please note that the electrical current consumption for these winches under load can be very high. The electrical cables must be sized accordingly. All winch motors have a freewheel mechanism for the winch drum. The freewheel allows the coiled cable to be manually unrolled very quickly. If the winch is mounted to a vehicle, the mounting site must be able to withstand the maximum load.
12 volt electric winches are usually operated using the wired remote control provided. This can be used to operate the winch forwards or backwards. The disadvantage of the wired remote control is the limited cable length. You can only observe the object that is going to be pulled from a distance. This problem is solved with a wireless remote control. You can carry the handheld wireless remote around with you, which enables you to work near the object being pulled. The wireless remote control operates up to 50 metres away from the winch.
12 volt electric winches are used for a wide variety of applications. The winch is always used with a cable or rope. A hook at the end of the wire cable or synthetic rope is attached to the object being pulled. This connects the object securely and enables the winching process. For example, recovery vehicles can use a 12V electric winch to pull a car onto a ramp or to rescue vehicles that are stranded at the side of the road. Winches on trailers are used to help load heavy, rollable objects, such as a car or quad bike. In the forestry sector, electric winches are used to pull felled trees out of the forest. Fire brigades and relief organisations use electric winches when carrying out rescue operations or providing disaster relief. The range of applications for electric winches is huge. Thanks to our wide range of 12 volt winches with different traction forces, you’re sure to find the right winch for your application.
Key differences between the gearing systems for 12 volt winches
A reduction gear system is essential for optimal power transmission from the motor to the winch drum. Most electric winches have a 3-stage planetary gearbox. A planetary gearbox is robust and efficient. Another advantage is that it is situated on one level parallel to the motor. This means that the winch motor can be mounted on a flat surface, such as a mounting plate. However, a braking mechanism needs to be installed to hold the winch load. The brake prevents unintentional spooling out of the winch drum. Here worm gears offer a major design advantage. Firstly, worm gears are self-braking. Therefore, the winch drum cannot spool out under load. Secondly, these types of gears are particularly robust. The drawback, however, is that the gearbox sits lower than the feet of the 12V winch due to its construction and therefore requires more effort to install.
