When the rope criss-crosses on the drum, it causes it to be crushed when the winch is operated, e.g. if it needs to pull 2 t.  This, in turn, causes the rope to become twisted and the wires to break, which can also result in the rope snapping off. Without a winch cable tensioner, there is also a much greater risk of the winch rope only winding onto one side of the drum. The rope can then end up coming off the edge of the drum, resulting in significant damage to the rope and winch.
